Dave Thompson MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has welcomed the recent news that new farmers are being offered the opportunity to apply for the tenancy of the Scottish Government’s first starter farm at Balrobert.
The 120 hectare unit, at Balrobert Farm near Inverness, was created from land deemed surplus to requirements following the construction of the Scottish Government’s state of the art Bull Stud at Knocknagael.
New entrants are being invited to apply for the initial ten year lease, under a Limited Duration Tenancy agreement.
Mr Thompson said: "This is excellent news. As the site includes sound grazing and cropping land with various steading buildings it will enable a new farmer to gain valuable experience of managing their own farm with all the trials and tribulations that entails."
He went on: “Farming is vital to Scotland’s economy and it is a crucial cog in the wheel of Highland industry. We must do all we can to introduce new talent to farming, ensuring that the great work that already goes on in the sector remains vibrant and continues to grow”.
Notes:
Applicants are being given the chance to lease Balrobert Farm from the Scottish Government for an initial ten year period under a Limited Duration Tenancy (LDT) agreement. Balrobert Farm is situated approximately 4 miles south of Inverness and was formerly one of the farms that made up the Scottish Government’s Crofters Bull Stud. The starter farm area extends to approximately 119.75 hectares (259.91 acres) of land with various steading buildings, and is available to let from September 1, 2014.
Interested parties can obtain copies of the Application Form from http://www.bellingram.co.uk/properties/show/1467 or by contacting Bell Ingram’s Perth office.
The closing date for applications will be 13:00 hours on the 21st July and the let will be available from 1st September 2014.
The creation of the starter farm at Balrobert was announced by the Rural Affairs Secretary at last year’s Royal Highland Show:
