Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has welcomed the news that folk in the Highlands are to benefit from £2,379,088 in Home Energy Programme Allocations.
This is part of the Scottish Government’s investment in the Home Energy Efficiency Programme for Scotland, which is allocating every Local Authority cash to help poor and vulnerable households with energy efficiency improvements such as solid wall, cavity and loft insulation, and is part of the Scottish Government’s wider pledge to tackle the scourge of fuel poverty.
Commenting on this Mr Thompson said, “I have been campaigning for some time on issues relating to fuel poverty so I am grateful that the Scottish Government is putting significant money towards its commitment to alleviating the problem that many in my constituency face”.
“As winter begins to bite, I hope many folk are able to take advantage of the solid wall, cavity and loft insulation measures, which are designed to make homes warmer and cheaper to heat”.
“Of course, where fuel poverty is concerned, it cannot be tackled by measures in isolation, which is why I will continue to push the UK energy regulator Ofgem to remove the unfair 2p energy surcharge applied to residents in the Highlands”.
Dave went on, “I recently initiated a survey to around 14,000 households to gather their opinions on energy provision and I hope that once the information is obtained we can use it to formulate strategy going forward where fuel poverty and energy costs are concerned”.
