Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch and Ian Blackford, MP for Ross, Skye, and Lochaber, have jointly submitted to the Consultation on Provisions for a Future Islands Bill and have called for a New Council and Constituency for Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber.
Dave said, “As I have mentioned previously, Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber is an Islands and Mountainous Coastal Region, suffering from all the problems of connectivity that the three main island groups do.
“I believe there is a strong case for Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber to have its own Council and Scottish Parliamentary Constituency, with the same status as the three main Island groups, of Orkney, Shetland, and Na h-Eileanan an lar.
“In the submission, we go into more detail, and we make it very clear that the Consultation on Provisions for a Future Islands Bill is the perfect opportunity to deliver such a proposal for Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber”.
Ian said, “Initial public reaction has been very positive, however we will be canvassing the electorate in Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber in due course to see how they feel about the idea, as any proposal is only as good as the public backing it receives.
“This is a great opportunity for a very positive development for the West Highlands”.
