HIGHLAND MSP Dave Thompson has pledged to take a consensual approach following his appointment as convener of one of the Scottish Parliaments most influential committees.
Fellow members of the Scottish Parliament's Standards, Procedures and Public Appointments Committee voted on Tuesday afternoon to approve Mr Thompson's appointment as convener of the parliament's in-house "watchdog", a position to which he had been nominated by his party. The committee will also have a major role in examining parliamentary reform and overseeing the public appointments system.
Mr Thompson, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, had already served as a member of the committee for more than two years during the last parliament when he was an SNP list member for the Highlands and Islands region.
He said: I am very pleased to have been appointed convener of one of the Scottish Parliaments very important and powerful committees. I already have experience of its workings from the last parliament and I look forward to the challenge of being convener over the next five years.
I am honoured to have been appointed to this important post and intend to ensure its business is conducted in a cross-party manner and will seek to encourage a consensual approach.
Notes:
During the last parliament, Mr Thompson served as a member of the Standards, Procedures and Public Appointments Committee. He was also a member of the parliament's Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee from 2007 to 2009 and is a member of Cross Party Groups for Crofting, Gaelic, Palliative Care, CHD & Stroke, Nuclear Disarmament, Rural, Digital Participation, Scots Language and is also the Convener of the Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis CPG and was a member of the Justice Committee and Parliamentary Liaison Officer from 2010 to 2011.
Outside politics, he was recently nominated as a vice-president of the UK Trading Standards Institute.
