NEWS that the area’s development agency has identified a single bidder to provide high speed broadband for the Highlands and Islands has been welcomed by Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP Dave Thompson.
After interest from four major companies for the 300 million pounds worth of work, BT has now been selected as the sole bidder with the contract details now being thrashed out.
The project is on track to see work begin in 2013, which will be critical in attracting investment and supporting existing businesses in the Highlands and Islands.
“I have been contacted by many constituents with concerns about access to the internet,” said Mr Thompson.
“It is vital that businesses and consumers in this part of the country are able to benefit from this modern form of infrastructure instead of being treated as an afterthought, as was often the case in the past with conventional forms of infrastructure investment.
“By identifying a credible single bidder, HIE has made a significant step forward in the provision of this vital form of investment in the future success of the Highland economy.”
