TODAY, Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP Dave Thompson addressed an international audience at an agricultural conference in Strathpeffer.
The 7th international agricultural biodiversity forum, Lets Liberate Diversity, was held in Strathpeffer today, and will continue until Sunday. The forum brings together key international organisations and is entitled Celebrating Crofters Seeds and Breeds.
Mr Thompson spoke of the rich history of crofting, before moving on to discuss the diversity in the Highlands. He told the delegates, “Crofting was born out of the same sense of challenge to an established order that inspires your own work.
“Today we see community-owned Highlands and Islands estates forging ahead with a whole range of innovative income generating projects, particularly in the field of renewable energy and this is to be welcomed.
“Our crofting landholding system has helped to retain cultural diversity in the Highlands and Islands. It is perhaps no surprise, therefore, that the Highlands and Islands is also a heartland of agricultural diversity.
“The values that this Lets Liberate Diversity forum is supporting, values of thrift, of saving and of recycling in ways that respect the cycle of life and the limits of natural systems, may offer us inspiration as we seek solutions to these questions.
Mr Thompson called on the delegates “to liberate these values, and to celebrate them.”
