Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has challenged the Labour party over their stance towards Scotland’s constitutional future.
In a response to a letter sent by David Stewart MSP asking questions of the SNP’s position on the referendum process, Dave has challenged Scottish labour to explain some inconsistencies in their position on independence.
The questions asked were:
Commenting on this, Dave Thompson said: “If the Labour party wants to enter any dialogue on the constitution it has to clarify its position on several issues. Labour and the SNP agree in their criticism of the austerity cuts being delivered by the Tory led coalition, but only the SNP offer any credible means of protecting Scotland from this politically driven agenda.
The SNP believe that decisions about Scotland should be taken as close as possible to the people who care the most, the people of Scotland. The Labour party cannot claim to truly represent the people of Scotland if they are willing to allow the spectre of future Tory Government’s, and the ideological cuts that come with them, to loom over Scotland.
Senior Labour figures have stated that they support more devolution, but have refused to specify which powers they would like to be devolved. This echoes back to the broken promises of 1979.
If there is to be a full debate on Scotland’s future then the Labour party must outline what they support, and give the Scottish people a clear choice. Independence is the only way of protecting Scotland from being at the mercy of Westminster and it’s government of the day.”
