FlySkye, the campaign group, which is calling for the resumption of air links to Skye, has welcomed the commencement of a public survey on demand for the resumption of air services to Skye Airport at Ashaig, Broadford. As part of the review into air services, RDC Aviation is conducting a survey of potential demand. The survey can be accessed at: http://www.rdcaviation.com/survey/skye/
Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, was pleased to welcome the launch of the public survey, saying: “A resumption of air services to Skye and Lochalsh would bring considerable economic benefits to the area, and deliver a welcome boost to tourism.
“I am confident that the RDC Aviation survey will highlight the strong demand for such a service. Previous reports such as the 2007 Hitrans report have recommended re-establishing air links from Broadford Airstrip to the Central Belt and Aberdeen, and the RDC Aviation survey can be another piece of evidence as Highland Council, HIE and Hitrans evaluate the resumption of this service.
“The fact that Twin Otters are an option makes this proposal very attractive, as they only need a very short runway. I believe that this service is long overdue, and I will be doing all I can to support FlySkye’s campaign and to secure this vital boost for the local economy.
Speaking in support of the public survey, Shirley Spear, Owner of the Three Chimneys restaurant and one of the promoters of the FlySkye campaign commented:
“We would encourage all interested parties to take part in the public consultation. Since launching FlySkye last month we have been overwhelmed by the interest and support for the resumption of air services to Skye and Lochalsh shown locally and nationally. Our Facebook page has attracted significant traffic, generating more than 1300 likes in just over a month: www.facebook.com/FlySkye.co.uk There is no doubt that air services would benefit the business community and the tourism industry which is so vital to the economy of Skye and Lochalsh and facilitate access for all within our communities to central Scotland and beyond as well as making Skye and Lochalsh more accessible for those wishing to come here. It is important that the strength of demand is clearly demonstrated through participation in the survey.
