Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, is writing to Highland Council to raise the maintenance of the A9 cycle path, particularly north of layby 83 at Drumochter.
This follows a meeting Dave chaired in Drumochter on the 23rd November with Joanne Seath of Transport Scotland, Jack Hunt of Sustrans, Fran Pothecary of CNPA, and Ken Hossack and Martin Chisholm of Scotland Transerv.
Dave said: “The meeting was promising, and I welcome the commitment from all involved to improve the standard of the A9 cycle path. In the long term Transport Scotland intend to bring this route up to state of the art standard.
“In the meantime, there are some smaller improvements that can be made, and to that end I have written to Highland Council to highlight issues with the sweeping of the route.
At the meeting it was agreed that Scotland Transerv would look to replace existing gates and cattle grid, and would also work with Transport Scotland to improve weed spraying and removal along the route. Transport Scotland will resurface some sections of the cycle route.
As well as measures to be improved with funding from Transport Scotland’s minor improvements budgets in the next two financial years, the meeting also revealed that there would be a long term commitment to bringing the standard of the cycle track up considerably.
Transport Scotland confirmed that in the course of dualling the A9, a state of the art track will be created.
Adding to this, Dave said: “As progress continues to be made on the dualling of the A9 road, improvements to the cycle path will improve transport links between the North and the central belt for cyclists as well as drivers.
“Any measure which encourages people to get outside is to be welcomed, and these improvements will mean a better maintained cycle route in the short term, with a substantial improvement in the long term.
“A state of the art cycle route running parallel to the dualled A9 will be a huge boost for my constituency, and indeed all the north of Scotland, and I will continue to push for both short and long term improvements to our transport infrastructure.
