Highlands and Islands SNP MSP, Dave Thompson will visit Beechwood House in Inverness this Friday (2nd October), Beechwood is one of only 2 designated units in Scotland which provide 24 hour care for alcoholics, and those deemed to be drunk and incapable.
Since opening in 1991 the centre has received 17,000 admissions and has helped to transform lives blighted by alcoholism. Beechwood was the first of its kind in Scotland and has been so successful that it has been used as a prototype by social services across the UK and Ireland.
Mr Thompson was contacted by staff at the centre and asked to support their campaign to keep the unit open, after Highland Council announced it was to withdraw funding. If a rescue package is not found the centre will close next year, with the loss of 10 jobs. The loss of the service it provides will mean that those suffering from alcoholism or found drunk and incapable, will end up in police cells again, or hospital wards.
Commenting Dave said: "I am extremely concerned at the threat to Beechwood House. This valuable unit was set up following the deaths of several intoxicated individuals in police custody. It has saved many lives over the years and helped to transform others. If the centre closes the cost of helping alcoholics will simply be transferred on to the police and NHS. It makes no sense whatsoever to close Beechwood House. We must get all the parties concerned round the table and find a way forward to save the unit."
