The Editor
Dear Sir,
The draft Crofting Reform Bill consultation paper has generated many responses but that from the Lib Dems is simply "Stop the Bill", a completely negative statement with no positive suggestions on how to improve the lot of our crofting communities.
The last crofting Bill, promoted by Lib Dem minister Ross Finnie, advocated a completely free market in crofts and was roundly condemned. That was the reason for setting up the Shucksmith enquiry, which has led to the current consultation. It is time the Lib Dems told us what their current proposals are instead of indulging in petty, party political point scoring and personal attacks on SNP politicians. Or do the Lib Dems simply have nothing positive to contribute?
The consultation paper is exactly what it says it is: a consultation, and the Scottish Government is looking for feedback which will help to refine the proposals in order to deal with issues like unworked crofts, croft housing and the democratisation of the Crofting Commission.
I am sure that the many responses, positive and negative, will be fully taken into account by the Minister, who is part of a listening Government, which will respond accordingly in due course.
Surely, the best way forward is to work together to ensure that the best possible bill comes forward so that we can ensure a bright future for our crofting communities and I hope that all Highlands and Islands MSP's can sign up to that.
Yours sincerely,
Dave Thompson,
