Highlands and Islands SNP MSP, Dave Thompson, has welcomed todays announcement of increased funding for Gaelic medium education by Minister for Gaelic, Michael Russell.
During a visit to the Gaelic primary school in Inverness, Mr Russell announced that Highland Council will benefit from an allocation of 1.5 million pounds to increase provision in its area. The council will shortly be identifying suitable sites for the establishment of full-Gaelic schools in Portree and Fort William, and this funding will allow the Council to accelerate progress on these projects.
Commenting, Dave said: "This is excellent news for the Gaelic language and culture, and particularly Fort William and Portree. The demand for Gaelic Medium Education is growing and will soon outstrip the available places. This funding will help Highland Council to meet that demand, and ensure that all those who wish to see their children taught through the medium of Gaelic will be able to do so."
