Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch SNP MSP Dave Thompson has welcomed new plans for targeted investment in Scotland’s rail network over the next five years. The ambitious plans for improved punctuality, better journey times and affordable fares are all included as part of the new rail franchise from 2014 that will be put out to tender. The franchisee will be expected to improve performance, increase passenger numbers and generally enhance the rail experience for passengers.
The Caledonian Sleeper Service to and from Fort William, and Inverness is included in the improvements, with a separate franchise to last fifteen years, and over £100 million in investment. The Scottish Government have committed to getting the best from the Caledonian Sleeper to ensure that it remains a unique, valued and high profile service. The specification of the franchise will be published later this year. There will also be around £10 million invested to accelerate the closure of level crossings, to make the rail network even safer for passengers, motorists and pedestrians alike. Network Rail is currently running a trial at Ardrossan of mini-barriers. If the trial is successful, then these could be installed at Automated Open Level Crossings to make them safer.
Commenting on these plans, Mr Thompson said: “This is a substantial set of measures that will help to secure a far better rail experience for passengers throughout Scotland. Here in the Highlands, the cutting of journey times is vitally important, as is improving commuter services, to encourage people to use the train rather that drive. I am delighted that the future of the Caledonian Sleeper Service is safe for at least the next fifteen years, as this is a vital service to Fort William and Inverness alike. It ensures people can travel down to London in time for meetings the next day, and arrive fresh, well rested and raring to go.
“I am particularly delighted at the £10 million investment in level crossings. I have campaigned since 2007 for barriers at all level crossings throughout the Highlands. I welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to ensuring that level crossings are safe for rail passengers, pedestrians and motorists alike.
“All in all, I think that this is a fantastic package of investment and a bold step forward for the rail network in Scotland.”
